Gilbert is developing the next generation of soft mist inhalers based on a proprietary electrospray (Electro Hydrodynamic Atomization or EHDA) technology to redefine treatment for lung patients. Gilbert’s breath actuated smart precision inhaler creates a monodispersed soft mist aerosol, with a customizable droplet size enabling more precise targeting of drugs to desired regions of the lungs, which has the potential to improve the efficacy and safety of treatments. Electrospray enables gentle, efficient delivery of both small and large molecule therapies in both solution and suspension formulations.

Recent developments

In 2020 Gilbert advanced from the benchtop system to a functional, handheld prototype device. At the same time Gilbert’s team has been preparing the foundation for meeting the stringent requirements for medical devices. This will allow us to seamlessly develop a safe and effective, CE certifiable investigational device for clinical trial developments.

Proof-of-Concept

Years of research work at TU Delft, and later by Gilbert, have been dedicated to the demonstration of proof-of-concept of the electrospray technology and related formulation development for a variety of pharmaceutical compounds. This was successfully done initially on a large benchtop system.

Gilbert’s genesis

Gilbert B.V. (Gilbert) is a spin-off of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and is based at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven since 2020. It’s Gilbert’s mission to make medical treatments easier and more effective for lung patients to extend and improve lives, as well as reduce the burden on the healthcare systems.

Electrospray in biomedical research

Electrospray ionization (ESI) is a technique used in mass spectrometry to produce ions using an electrospray in which a high voltage is applied to a liquid to create an aerosol. It is especially useful in producing ions from macromolecules because it overcomes the propensity of these molecules to fragment when ionized.

When it began

Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA), also called electrospray, has been studied for centuries starting in the late 1500s when William Gilbert (1544-1603) first observed how a drop of water deformed into a cone in the presence of an electric field.

Since the 1990s electrospray has been successfully employed in applications across a broad range of industries, from biomedical, to nano-materials to food packaging to the aerospace industry.

Gilbert Completes Series A Investment Round

Dutch MedTech Company Gilbert Raises €7 Million Series A to Redefine Treatment for Lung Patients.

Eindhoven, The Netherlands, June 7 2023 – Gilbert, today announced the completion of its €7 million Seed – and Series A investment round. The investment rounds are led by Dutch deeptech investor DeeptechXL and joined by existing shareholders NanoCorp and Delft Enterprises.
